THEY FOUND A PEACE OF HOMELANDThe Community of former "street children" in São Paulo Fortaleza (gnm). When I first became acquainted with the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends in September, 1999 through a physician's Information Lecture, I immediately thought that it could be an important help for the children and youth, but also for the workers in a project for
After an introductory lecture, the workers of the "Barraca da Amizade" ("Friendship Hut") and some young people were interested in starting a Youth Community within a project for street children that had been existing for over 15 years. In this project, children and youth between 12 and 18 looking for an alternative to living on the street are taken up. In most cases these children have fled to the street from intolerable family situations, keeping themselves alive mainly by begging and stealing. There they also came into contact with drugs, which they used to deaden the feeling of hunger. Without being able to return home, without a shelter and without education and formation life held no prospects for them. A first Step toward an orderly life Thus the teachings of Bruno Groening can also help these youth to overcome difficulties in all situations in life and to have a guide and helper at their side at all times. THE LAME WALK, THE BLIND SEEBruno Groening's activity in 1949 - "The miracle of Herford" (Part 1) Cologne (the) In the spring of 1949 Bruno Groening - an unknown carpenter from Danzig - became world famous overnight. News of the "miracle doctor", as he was soon called, spread like wildfire. There was talk of incredible healings, an army of misery arose and for months hundreds and thousands of healing seekers trooped to wherever he was known to be. The whole thing began in Herford, Westphalia. A. Kaul, Ph.D., witnessed the happenings at the time and recorded them in a brochure. Here an excerpt: Mankind's deep misery touches me In the night of June 17, 1949 the police wanted to provide lodging in barracks to around 50 mothers with small children, but they couldn't be persuaded - they wouldn't budge from their places, and even the rain that came didn't cause the people to leave. They flocked here from all parts of Germany - the hopeless und the suffering, the young and the aged, women, girls, children from all social positions and levels; Americans, English, Belgians, Swiss, Swedes, Hungarians, Polish, well even gypsies who came in droves after the successful healing of a dumb gypsy child. The lame, blind, deaf, a community of misery and distress. Poor people, whether they now sit in a luxury car or laboriously make their way on crutches. The hopeless and the hoping, the exhausted and the desperate, hundreds and thousands of people with only one and the same wish - to be healed! None of them asks whether what is happening here has an official or ministerial stamp of approval, whether the Scientists are for or against it, whether the person who is supposed to heal is a messiah or a scribe, they want to be healed from their human suffering; they want to be active, happy people again, they want to be well again. Between this human misery and the dispute which has arisen over Bruno Groening there is a chasm of human incompetence. Come on the stage the doubters, the sceptics,

The boy with paralysis in both legs is sitting with two crutches next to his mother: "Stand up, my boy!" The mother interrupts: "He cannot stand up, he is paralysed!" Groening turns the head around. "You shouldn't say that!", he says to her in an almost severe tone. "You are holding on to your child's illness!. Stand up, my boy, you can do it!" Red spots appear on the narrow face of the child, his mouth trembles and tears roll from his eyes. Shaken, the numerous people in the room watch as the boy lifts himself from the chair and now stands there, alone, without his crutches. "And now come to me!" With unsteady steps he goes up to Groening, who takes his hand and looks him in the eyes for a long moment. He lovingly strokes the head of the child and sends it back to its mother: "Go on practicing slowly, and don't overdo it, the legs are to weak still! On the way home use the crutches again, but soon you can throw them away!" The happy eyes of the child and a happy mother are the reward. The young girl with the chronic headaches is healed even before Groening addresses her. No, she has no more pain any longer. "Do you want the pain back again?" "No, no, for God's sake, no" it comes from her lips. And the doctor? He has watched these events without a word. He gives Groening his hand, saying: "Mr. Groening, I stand at your complete disposal, I would testify in your favour any time!" Groening: "I will give you three chairs for your patients! Take heavy and also simple cases, and keep me informed. In two weeks you'll hear more from me!" The telephone rings incessantly. There is a call from the hospital in B. A patient urgently asks for Groening. "Tell her that I cannot get away now. I still have much to do until tomorrow morning, but I will help. Write down the time. Call again at nine o'clock tomorrow morning!" Again a call: "Yes, I promised to come. At five o'clock we will leave here. I am there and help!" To be continued |
